Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Caméra d’Or for best first film, this feature debut from Houston resident and AFS grant recipient Phạm Thiên Ân journeys from urban to rural Vietnam alongside Thiện, a young man escorting his late sister-in-law’s body to their home village. Thiện also accompanies his five-year-old nephew Đạo, who faces life without parents between his mother’s death and his father’s long absence. The pair embark on a sometimes poignant, sometimes mysterious odyssey through past and present, as Thiện encounters the people and places of the life he left behind—all presented in carefully choreographed long takes of up to twenty minutes, and imbued with a delicate touch of magical realism. - Josh Martin, Feature Film Programmer
